Joyce Carr Stedelbauer – Elephant Rides

Spread the love

Elephants are coming to the AWESOME ALPHABET ANIMAL PARTY !

As a child did you ever want to ride an elephant or slide down a giraffe’s neck?  I did.  I wanted to be swung in the elephant’s trunk up to his back.  One happy summer day we visited the St. Louis Zoo and I got to ride on a gigantic beast that smiled at me.  I was 8 years old and the ride cost 50c.

The trainer whose name was Manolo helped me up a little ladder and placed me behind him.  I held on tightly to his back because we were so high up in the air.  One other child sat in front of Manolo so I was the third one.  It was wonderful.  I could see all the way over to the monkeys and the giraffes. The elephant’s big ears kept flapping back and forth and slapping my bare legs.  When we got back from our ride all over My daddy swung me down in his safe arms and I knew I would never forget this day.  After our big picnic and the long drive home when I went to bed my legs were all chapped red so I knew it hadn’t been just a dream.

I learned that a big daddy-sized elephant can hold up to 2/12 gallons of water in his trunk to play and shower but he drinks through his mouth.  But I never got to slide down a giraffe’s neck, did you?
