Sharon Canfield Dorsey – Lost Souls

Spread the love

He sits alone in his 12 x 14 room,
isolated from fellow-residents,
abandoned by his family.

Staff brings food three times a day
but he’s afraid to eat it because
they are not wearing gloves or masks.

When he tried to advocate for more safety,
staff called his family members
and branded him a “trouble-maker.”

His contact with the outside world
is the television’s grim statistics or
an occasional call from a friend.

Nobody tells him if the evil virus
has invaded his premises, claimed
friends. Staff says it’s a privacy issue.

So he waits, forbidden to walk past other
closed-door rooms to reach the outside,
breathe fresh air, revel in the birth of spring.

He waits and wonders what lies ahead.
He is past his eighty-fifth year – reconciled
to dying — but hoping for more time, for more life.
