Joyce Carr Stedelbauer – April 13, 2018 – The Orange Bus is Almost Here!

I never rode a school bus except to games and choir competitions.  But I think for the Hippos it must take a BIG orange bus to bring them to the AWESOME ALPHABET ANIMAL PARTY! The new children’s book from HIGHTIDE PUBLICATIONS is almost here and there is a bit of
a back story.

When our first grandson was in second grade and we were going for a visit, his teacher asked if I would do a poetry session with her class.  I took several of my favorite books to read and also decided to write a poem of my own just for his class.  We had fun!  After I left this very creative teacher asked her students to look up these animals and birds and draw them.  Then she put the poem and the pictures together and gave me a copy.  The drawings were AWESOME!

Years passed and I met Jeanne Johannsen the founder of HIGHTIDE PUBLICATIONS.  Working with her has been as much fun as a party.  She has brought exciting color and creativity to this project.  We have added questions and answers at the back of the book so that teachers and parents have an interactive text to delight and stimulate their children.

Animals and birds have always been a fascination for me.  I remember my first visit to the Zoo.  It was the World Famous St. Louis Zoo in beautiful Forest Park.  It has been voted the top free attraction in America.  Over 3 million visitors a year can see more than 16,000 animals.  It was founded in 1904 when the city of St. Louis, Mo. Purchased the flight cage of the world’s fair and founded the Zoological society at the time of the World’s Fair in 1910.

That is where I rode the elephant and wanted to slide down the giraffe’s neck.

Joyce Carr Stedelbauer – Good News!

I heard that the Hippopotamus are coming to the Awesome Alphabet Animal Party, in fact they’ve rented a big orange bus to bring them to the zoo.  They like cruising across the countryside so they can count the cows, admire the horses, sheep and goats.  They wish they could stay and play but don’t want to be late for the party. They come from a very long way away.

We visited some Hippo’s in Africa that call Lake Naivasha in Uganda home.  After tea served on a fully appointed table set with a white tablecloth out on the emerald lawn we were invited to step into a rowboat the size of a leaf.  Elijah, our guide welcomed us with his smile as wide as the lake.  All around the shore stood gaunt black trees with their feet in the water. Cormorants, drying their wings filled every branch.  We named them Cormorant Condominiums.  When we reached well into the deep water, Elijah laid his oars aside.  We waited silently, but not for long.
One by one the Hippos surfaced all around us, yawning as if they had been napping.  We could see all 40 teeth, like looking into the mouth of a cave. But it was a bit disconcerting when he told us that Hippos are not just herbivores but also will kill and eat meat.  We felt too close for comfort with only a few inches of freeboard.

I wonder who else is coming to the AWESOME ALAPHABET ANIMAL PARTY?
